Overview

Wi-Fi is the first thing to blame and the last thing to fix. When a laptop drops mid-transfer, when a bench machine sits in a dead zone, or when an onboard NIC finally dies, a wired port solves it in one step. This adapter puts a full-size RJ45 jack on the end of a USB-A plug and gets out of the way.

It runs at 10/100/1000 Mbps with auto-sensing, so it negotiates whatever the switch on the other end offers. Auto MDIX means straight-through and crossover cables both work — no need to check which one is in the drawer. LINK and ACT LEDs sit beside the jack, so you can tell a dead port from a dead cable without opening anything.

Good for

  • Laptops and ultrabooks with no built-in Ethernet port
  • Replacing a failed onboard network card without opening the machine
  • Wired transfers, backups and OS installs that Wi-Fi makes painful
  • Bench and test machines that need a reliable link
